In an effort to keep everyone informed and engaged in the Wood Street Field project, I will be posting periodic updates as work continues on the field.
UPDATE 7/30/09:
The date has been set for the Larry Bray Memorial Pitch dedication. We will dedicate the field and play our inaugural match on Saturday September 19, 2009. Mark your calendars. We have an entire weekend of events planned. This is a very important event and full participation is expected from our membership.
The tentative schedule of events is as follows: Friday 9/18/09 - Casual get-together at a local pub (probably Surrey), Saturday 9/19/09 - Field dedication ceremony at Wood Street to be followed by a Match against Jacksonville and Old Boys match against Jacksonville. There will be a social at the new pitch right after the matches and dedication ceremony. Sunday 9/20/09 - Golf tournament.
I will keep you posted as details come together. This is a very significant event. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend.
UPDATE 5/4/09:
The irrigation system was installed at the field last week and we had a "rock pick-up" this past Saturday. The next step will be some over-seeding to take place in the next week or so. We are moving right along with work on the field and if we continue our progress, we should be on time to have our inaugural match and field dedication on schedule in late September of this year.
There will be ongoing expenses for maintenance of our field and we will have to raise some money for some "basic" lighting so we have some light to practice there in the Fall. We will go with simple street-light type poles for the time being, as they are more in line with our current budget. That's it for now.
Many of you already know the work has begun in earnest. We have already had a few "work days", and I'd like to thank all of you who show up to these important events. Work is ongoing and we will periodically need bodies. We all have jobs and won't always be available when needed, so don't go nuts if we ask for workers "during business hours". We realize we may not get any takers, for obvious reasons, but for the sake of saving the club money, we may at least make the occasional "crazy" request.
Afer the Chronicle article we had a donation inquiry that prompted a "special" meeting. Below are the minutes from the meeting. Pretty self-explanatory and pretty exciting for the club. Anyway, enjoy and I'll keep y'all posted. Take a look now and then. Cheers, Rocky.
Wood Street Field Project Update 2/17/09
If any of you have been by the field in the last few days, you will have noticed fencing being installed. We received the large contribution to the project that we had been working on and are moving ahead in hopes of having an inaugural game and dedication ceremony in late September 2009.
Our next phase will be installation of an irrigation system and reseeding. We are going ahead with irrigation even though we will end up going "cheap" on the reseeding. That way, if one day down the road, we can afford some really good grass, the irrigation system will already be in place. "As is" the pitch looks pretty "playable", so anything we do from here on is "icing" or "gravy" - whichever you prefer.
We are in the preliminary planning stages of the event in September, but our plan is to have a match against Jacksonville, hopefully to include an "old boys" match, as well. We would like to have all the refreshments at the pitch, commemorative t-shirts and the works. This is something the club has been working on for longer than I care to think about, and being this close to the finish is really exciting. I'll keep y'all posted.
Cheers, Rocky
